The short answer is quality and craftsmanship.

Many mass-produced mailbox posts sold at large retail stores are built for quick assembly and lower cost, often using thinner materials and basic construction methods. What screws should I use with a pressure treated wood mailbox post?
Pressure-treated lumber contains preservatives that can corrode standard construction screws and nails over time. For a DIY mailbox post project, you should always use corrosion-resistant fasteners designed for pressure-treated wood, such as:

Pressure-treated lumber must dry before it can properly absorb stain or paint. The best way to determine this is with a wood moisture meter.
As a general rule:
- Wood should be below about 15% moisture content before staining or painting.
- If the wood is too wet, the finish will not penetrate properly and may peel.
Also keep in mind that waiting too long can cause other problems, especially for mailbox posts located along the roadside. Dirt, road salt, and weather exposure can stain or warp unprotected wood. Applying a quality exterior stain once the wood is dry helps protect the post and keep it looking good longer.
What is the difference between pressure-treated lumber and ground-contact lumber?
Pressure-treated lumber refers to wood that has been chemically treated to resist rot, insects, and moisture. This treatment helps extend the life of the wood when used outdoors.
Ground-contact lumber refers to the recommended use rating of the lumber. It means the wood has been pressure treated to a higher standard so it can safely be installed directly in soil or in conditions where it is exposed to constant moisture.
In simple terms, all ground-contact lumber is pressure treated, but not all pressure-treated lumber is rated for ground contact. For mailbox installations, using ground-contact rated lumber is strongly recommended because the post will be set in the ground and exposed to moisture over time.
